Call your local council, they can tell you.
...or do as I do and dig a hole in the backyard.

TTG council has green days which allows you to dispose of old batteries, oil tyres and rims etc.
So I assume your local council will do something similar on the 2nd Sunday of the month.

take it to a workshop.....with a 6 pack of beers and see how you go
