Hey guys & girls couple months ago I purchased myself a ae86 and atm I'm loving it. I think its time for a newer engine because quite frankly the 4ac is weak as dogs balls. I still consider myself a newb with toyota engines and so on as I was a nissan fan before I got my ae86. I want a N/A engine so no turbos that means no CA or SR's. I have a budget or 5k and I dont want to go over the budget. I leaning towards the 16v 4age but the 20v or 4agze is possible.

If I do decide on the 16v 4age what is needed for the conversion ?
Would I be able to hook up a aftermarket ecu ?
Would I need a different gearbox ?

for 5G a 16v is your best option, a 20v or GZE will be cutting things close to do under 5G

Best bet is buy a front cut with engine/loom/ECU etc, makes life much easier, then need to put in a pilot bearing to line up the box I/P shaft, and get the ntake plenum modded, water lines altered, and exhaust made up. Other than that its pretty easy

*cough*

go 4age ed... it's more than enough power for a begineer and its pretty much bolt out bolt in... 20v is much more complicated... If i had my time over again i'd just do a 16v smallport

Getting a fresh 4age would be a really good idea I think http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

Just one that isn't going to give you much trouble while you're attempting to destroy it.

would i be correct in saying about 1k for 4age (thats saying u can get the 4age for about $500, say what u like but i have found them for $500ish) and necessary parts to install then another $500ish to get someone to put it in unless u can do it ure self

yep i would do what he said... id do something like a hybrid 4ag plus the good thing about the 16v is you hav better access to aftermarket gooddies as opposed to parts for a 20v

Small port 4age.

More power, better block, oil squirters in block for piston cooling, better design on ports and head, Oil drain pipe on head to block, bigger better crank/bearings (although some later big port 4ages had the small port style 7 rib block, without squirters), All MAP sensored as opposed to AFM......The list goes on....newer also.

yeah i wish i had gone 16v, would've been cheaper, and heaps easier to get aftermarket gear for them, extractors, cams etc.

3500 - 4g!!!11
Whats that for?
You should be able to find a 16v 4ag for around 500-700 without ecu
straight bolt in fit (DIY backyard jobbie)
tune length extractors
get an adapter plate and fit some Mikuni/Solex/Dolerto's/weber etc carbys
and tune
then sliiiiiide http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif

My RWD 4ag conversion price went a little like this 4 yrs ago.

RWD Motor, standard ecu, loom + standard rebuild and timing belt $2800

installing was $2200

full new exhaust, front to rear, keep standard manifold after reading sherwoods site.

new inlet line 10mm- old return line 6mm- fuel system + pump, baffles and fuel filter whilst using the carby tank.

brand new flywheel and clutch + release and spigot bearing.

new spark plugs + leads,

new injector seals, injector clean (2 were totally bloked)

Ricer pod filter

+ all new hoses and clamps were possible.

Labour was $400, sort of mates rates.

Thats about it really. Turn around was 2-3weeks, working on it part time.

Heaps can be done for cheaper, depends how much you do yourself. Approx $5000 for me, with nothing done by me, all done by professionals.

Why Bells charge $7000 http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/5/4/536981.jpg , even with a new ecu i would've thought it would cost that much, not these days. But they would have there reasons i guess.

Cheers

Steve

Ur Best bet is to get an AE82 with 4AGE 16v half cut. Thats what im doing. its really useful cause all of the little things like the bellhousing bolts or waterpump and alternator are all already there.

I had a mate who just got the engine and was forever runnin to the wreckers for the little shite bits that you dont pay attention to.

Getting one with a smashed rear end at a wreckers or at the auctions is the way to go.

how much hassle is it for a fairly noob person to do this? i understand that getting the engine and/or gear box out is a total of 11 bolts. 1/2 cut option is great so how wats the estimate price for that? my neighbour is a mechanic so im sure for a slab he will give me a hand plus i have mates with know how. i know for a fact the price of a 4age is cheaper than they are in QLD.

someone should sticky a DIY 4age 16v red top conversion. club4ag.com used to have one but its gone

yoshi, before I swapped the motor in my sprinter I'd never really done more than oil/plugs and swapping all those little 'shite bits' that wore out. The package I bought was really really easy, it was pulled complete and running out of another sprinter and put straight into mine the next weekend. And that was all it took, engine out friday, engine in saturday and final wiring and setup on sunday.

Just budget more time if your package is incomplete or less all hooked up.

now that midnight blue mentioned a ae82 1/2 cut that seems like the best option. the only thing that is troubling me is the wiring, does absolutely every thing need to be re-wired? i dont like the idea of having the car off the road for ages cos i have to do absolutely everything
