View Full Version : How does a Stocky go? (4AC)

Hi all,
Bit of a newbie here, but Im looking to get my first car, a sprinter hopefully with 4AGE if i can afford it, but more likely a stock with 4ac just to get me around for a while until I can afford a transplant.
Can someone tell me tho.. how does the 4AC go? I know its 60kw and an AE86/85 is pretty light but how does it perform? Im used to driving pretty slow cars, 1.8L Astra, 1.3L Barina etc... and used to drive parents old Merc C200 (sluggish, heavy as.. 0-100 felt like 13secs-14sec!)
Will the 4AC perform adequately? I dont expect much from it, so long as it can pull, get up a hill and over take every now and then.
I'm probably going to have to buy interstate too, so thats why I can't test drive for myself.
Theres just hardly any cards going for sale in Sydney (anyone in Sydney have one to sell!??)
How much different does an after market exhaust make?
Any input appreciated.
Cheers.

Firsty, don't waste any money trying to upgrade a 4AC, they belong in a simsmetal bin, or used for a boat anchor. Remember to paint it blue so it doesn't scare the fish on the way down.
They have a tendency to blow headgaskets and spin bottom end bearings and snap timing belts, they run a crappy Aisan carb that is a pain in the arse to rebuild and in general are a piece of crap engine that is best avoided or upgraded at the soonest date available...
They are not a performance engine and it will feel just like any other slow car you have driven before.
Save your money, do the twincam conversion and forget the 4AC

You either drive like a bogan and slip the clutch too much, or there is a mechanical problem causing excessive wear or slip

From my experiences 4ac's generally don't die. Just a few handful out there seem to let go. My one wouldn't die no matter what I did. I have heard of people intentionally trying to blow theirs up with no results.
They are crap if you are thinking about anything to do with performance. They are ok if you leave them alone, look after them and only for just daily driving.
And I think they only have 57kw@the flywheel.. And that's in 1983-85.

Yup, they're totally gutless, but hey they still move the car around fine and can ripup. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

My old 4AC had about 280, 000 kms on it and didn't look like it had been rebuilt. It also didn't look like it had been loved for a long time but was still a lot better than my old 1.3 Swift (barina). I changed the oil and air filter and it went a lot better. I think it was a bit faster than dads R13 2 litre pintara (a sad, sad car...)

Well my 4AC was doing 100km/h 3rd gear entries and holding them at calder yesterday:P
I reckon they are a great motor for getting around and if people tell you that fun cant be had with them, bullshit!

Oh you can have heaps of fun with them... especially on the weekend in the garage, under the car cursing and swearing at them.
I give it a few months before you've had a gutful of drifting with a 4AC and put a real mans engine into it http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

Tough engines! I had one with a fist sized hole in the side of the block, and no oil! It still drove, up a long driveway. All the way onto the tow truck for the new owner!!!

Thanks for the responses all...
Seemed a little mix, but i reck a 4ac should do me for a few months..
When people say they last forever.. how many kms are we talking?
Most cars selling on the forum are high 200s to 300s kms...

They get to the bottom of a lakes pretty quickly tho... http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/2thumbs.gif
Apparently they can still be going strong up to 400,000kms.... thats what Ive heard anyway.

They are a decent engine. Some of you guys definately know the driver who drives the 4ac sprinter keeping up with dc2rs on old pac. So from that above they must okay. For potential wise I wouldnt even both with a 4ac. They arnt a performance engine and would be worth your wild to get a 20v or 16v placed in.

oi! 4ac's are are awesome motors, tuff as, fucking reliable, need very little (basic) maintainence, use fuck all fuel, and IF you do manage to blow one up they are $2 to replace
they dont go too badly, and there is defintiely fun to be had,
my car did ok at pt gawler with 4ac in the dry
and even 4kc

whats this talk about revving 4ac's up to 8500 / 9000 RPM>??? hasnt anyone heard of valve bouncing before and yeah they are unbreakable..!!! lots of fun to be had in wet or dry i can clear a nice lefthander in the dry with a tug on the handbrake and some momentum mine has never given me any problems apart from a split water hose and it has 400,000K's on the clock!!

they can be barrels of fun for the budget conscience... best bet just do regular services, and try a 15w-40 oil... gives 'em a real wake up!!
had mine to 7500rpm, and 180km/h (i ran out of speedo.... dont recommend that) and about the only thing ive had go wrong with mine was a couple of water seals (god damn friggen things it was leaking at the top AND bottom) and the distributor needed new point and a new cap and thats about it...
dont even try to modify them, just find the nearest boat that needs an anchor and hand it over...

i bet you if you tip sand in the oil cap and remove the oil filter.. it will kill it..
fortunatly i think they actually lack the power to blow themselfs up.. much like alot of the older toyota stuff.. who has killed an 18R-C?? i certainly havent!!.. oh wait.. this 1 time, at band camp, the dummy shaft that turns the dizzy/oil and fuel pump snapped.. punched a hole in the front timing cover, snapping the timing chain, and eventually stopping in the radiator... but thats just cos i missed 3rd exiting the freeway.. got 1st by mistake.. lots of compression lockage http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif

4ac goes ok, if you compare it to other engines of the same type from the era It makes a few more kilowatts than a 1.6 Gemini for example........

As I said in the 4AC for drift post; I had the 20v planned for the first week. After driving the 4AC for a week I postponed the engine transplant.
Its definately no performance engine but given the weight of the ae86 its enough to have some fun in. It seems to take anything you throw at it. I had a little 4K in my old rolla and spent 50,000kms trying to break the sucker, just so that I had an excuse to do the conversion but ended up selling the car running at 350,000km. Didn't skip a beat and didn't even use any oil.
I'm gonna put some money into suspension before doing the engine upgrade. There's still life in the 4AC yet.

yeah im the same, im gonna probly do the engine last, so when i do eventually get to it i will hopefully be better skilled driver, have more money so i can put the engine i want into aswell a refreshen it up and and extras

Haha, I like it.
I remember someone on here trying to buy spare 4ac's that they could bolt a turbo kit to and blow up. Did it actually ever work?

never driven a 4ac before but being the owner of a 4k with some carby problems even that still gets sideways in the wet.
So no matter what engine u have there is fun to be had (ie, dirt, rain, grass), but ofcourse there is a limit.
And since i have no tacho, im not sure how high u can rev a 4k, all i know is max you can get out of second gear is 70k http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/pokes.gif

4AC has it's bad points and good point! , it's slow, chews heaps of fuel, makes you wanna give up on life......wel maybe not, but get a twin cam pref a 16v. Ive been drifting the 4ac for 3 years, yes it still goes, you cant kill it but the rest of the car is dying shocks, springs, clutch , gearbox etc. Im still saving for my conversion and count every day im so over the C but it will get you to work, for a price. oh and my dad tuned it on sunday and it now can hold it's speed up a hill in 5th, go dad!!!!

A 4K will rev to 8000 RPM regularly without too much of a problem
After regular excursions to 8500+ RPM things start to go bang
My old white car had a 42/88 Cam (equiv to approx ~315 degree duration) and I got 80 kph out of first gear and about 130kph out of second gear... didn't sound very good though http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif
I took it well off the clock a few times... I never did get it all the way to the top of 5th gear. Flying a car with the aerodynamics of a besser brick at 200kph isn't fun at all...
memories...

i dragged out pulling my 4ac out for ages cause i didnt wanna let her go, when i 1st got her she had a seized cam which snapped the timing belt, cause of lack of oil change. I unseized the cam chucked on another belt, found out it had a blown head gasket aswell.....couple bottles of chemi-weld later and she lived on valve bounce everyday overheated many times severe oil leaks, water leaks i spun a big end and she still drove....I put some old gearbox oil in the engine to try shut up the hectic rattles, and this lasted me ages and she always fired 1st go (except when flooded ie. nebo http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif )
