Is the main different just the engine.?
if u were looking for a 86. and a 85 was dropped at ur door.
would u take the 85 and beef up the engine etc.
or continue to try and find a cheap 86 and than do that up.

by my understanding the 85 has a 1.5 engine, cant rember what one, but if you were chosing between and oz spec and an 85 there would be no difference. cuz at the end of the day your going to change the engine, suspension etc... but an import 86... id get that over an import 85

So your importing it? Where from Japan or New Zealand? Does it need to be complianced? If you can get it on the road for that price it sounds like it might be worth while. I mean lets face it most people get ADM ae86 s for the shell and straight away start replacing it all with JDM/ aftermarket/homemade gear.
Cheers

I'm not sure that we got the 85? I know that new zealand got them. Maybe your thinking about the ae82 corolla? Thier FF

You'll find that alot of ae85s were grey imported pre '91 before the old green plate low volume import scheme came in (pre sevs), like my old car. Back then cars were properly privately imported (i.e. no compliance or plate on the firewall), but unlike now there was no period of ownership of the car in another country required.
Back in those days grey imports came into the country in a much lower volume, so proper pre '91 imported Japanese cars are quite rare, particularly in the eastern states (they're semi-common in WA etc., probably due to a lack of official dealer networks around at the time). The good thing about these cars too is that they only have to comply with a very minimal set of adrs (mine was proper Jap spec, no side intrusion bars or anything), allowing for a greater field of aftermarket modification.
The easiest way of picking one of these cars is no compliance plate, and some sort of original pre '91 paperwork (i.e. the car's first rego papers) stating that the car is a private import and exempt from adrs.

85 RWD?[/b]
Yes. I think the difference between the 2 is that the 86 has better engine, suspension and drive line. Don't qoute me on that tho. If you really don't know if it is a RWD look under the car. I asume that you have looked at the car?

Yeah well the ae85s in New Zealand have a motor called the 3au from memory and apparently their worse than the mighty 4AC. That however is as far as my knowledge of them goes tho. Oh yeah and just noticed levi nafey is reading the thread. Bring on shockies man so excited!! I'm like a little kid and your like santy claus!!! :::PPPP

Man, for a grand you'd mad not to! Is it a trueno or a levin?
Just buy it, ditch the 3au, and do a t series, 4age swap.
If you wanted, you could buy it for $100 and sell it for probably $3-4k +

If there is an 85 near you that is registered and only $1000 buy it. If you don't like it you can always sell it for like $3000 anyway.
85 and 86 are pretty much the same car with a few small differences. I'm sure they're the same to drive tho.

I may have read somewhere (don't quote me on this one) that an 85 has a cable clutch. If I am right it's another little headache to deal with with conversions.

yeah, an 85 with rego for a grand! even if you dont convert it to a better engine or like it. thats a good price of any RWD in my books.
1000 bucks!!! you bet its worth it! <- unless its guttered with cancer and its 5000 bucks off a road worthy... of corse

Yep, they have a cable clutch and a K50 Gearbox.

To bust some myths and summarise:
AE85's are:
RWD
have a 3au
K50 with cable clutch
Different (i.e. worse) suspension
S series (i think. not sure.)
Same interior is the same as an ADM AE86.
Still, it's a fecking bargain.
Javal.
