UPDATE!!! 14.12.2006
I have recently lost my licence and the hachi is off the road for 6 months, so the transfiormation has started, I'm just doing a few little things at the moment like removing sound deadner, getting the motor ready to come out by pulling of un needed things like the a/c compressor and condenser etc. when I get some more cash in my pocket ill be buying a custom bellhousing for a w series box, and a microtech ecu to run my 20v, but anyway here are some pics of my progress for now, ill keep you all updated
sound deadner out of the boot so far.

UPDATE!!!!! 4.4.2007
well havent done anything more to the car itself since last updat accept sussing out my method of wiring the microtech and came to the conclusion that to make it a neater wiring job I will need a new loom so I purchased a 99% complete blacktop wiring loom for $150. I also drove to brisbane today to track down the rest of my rwd cooling kit from anthony kellam that waited 3 months for then only got half of it, so I had to drive 3 hours to brisbane to get the rest of the parts I didnt want to wait another 3 months for and also realised I didnt post a pic of my 4ag/w5x bellhousing so here's some pics hope you like

another little add to the guage department so I don't have to have a big gay monster tacho with full hektik massiv shift lite broooo
it's an autometer DPSS has 4 digit rev display with small but bright LED shiftlight, needed this as I couldnt be farked buying the secial plug for higher rev signal in my other one, I think this one displays up to 10 or 11k rpm so pretty happy with it, I swapped it for my other shiftlite (thanx timmay) here's a pic

wow, bro thats a smick looking motor,
i am planning to do a 20v conversion.
but was wonder, its not a big process to convert to SC form 20v?
internalls, inlet, etc need changing? http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/blink.gif
...i've never tried an engine swap! but plan to.
i heard its easy starting with a 4AGZE?
are there any advantages to the 20v?

hey man thanks for the kind words...
as for supercharging the 20v i think the stock internals should handle a small amount of boost fairly reliably.. if you want a SC your better off going with a gze..... but this all depends on your driving style, well pretty much how your going to drive the car and what u want to do with it....this has been covered in many topics before so i wont go too far into what the pros and cons are of the 20v as oppose to the gze....pretty much they have pretty much the same power figure standard but all the torque curves n shit are different the 20v revvs alot harder and makes its power up high as a gze has power from down low but has fuk all up high....

your a silly boi dane'O lol yeah I'm going to wire up the starter motor and give it a turnover this weekend, might leave doing all the seals for a later date, I'm just going to do head gasket and shit (trd 0.5mm) so I can get this shit on the road, ill take my flywheel to get machined wednesday and bolt the clutch up and I gotta get a throwout bearing carrier and I can mount box and shit, I'm going to lay my wiring loom out tomozza and try get that shit sorted but yeah might give ya a hand on the weekend, I'm going to buy some paint and finish the floor and shit this week, and then all I need to do is get my tailshaft and brakes and all drivetrain will be bolted in, so hopefully I don't get scared by all the wires and get some motivation to do this loo and all will be good

yeah it's giving me a lot more self satisfaction learning how to do everything myself, I'm no mechanic and I've done everything from start and most probably to finish y myself, so anyone that sees this car when it's done I think will be pretty amazed at what an amature can do, I'm trying my very best to make this conversion as neat as possible, so it will be a not only very neat conversion but a very strong converion as it's got the w58 and t series, so should be very reliable aswell, ill be very proud when it's done as I've done every single thing myself
I'm rambling lol I'm drunk ill update this weekend, gearbox and loom should be in he car ill keep yas posted

24th August 2007, 12:12 PM
Looks good man, just 1 thing i noticed may cause you some trouble if its not corrected, the shifter doesnt seem to be cenralised in the tunnel?? if it's off line it will more than likely cause some unnecessary vibrations and wearing of uni joints even. Just thought i'd point that out, sure you've already noticed it yourself hey?!
dr1ft-pig
24th August 2007, 12:27 PM
yeah its weird, the box is centralised its on a lean though??? its all fucked up it seems to be straight though if not ill fuck with the mount some more
the mount was in a ae86 previously, and the box i have was the box that was in the car also, even the bellhousing, so i really dont know whats gone wrong, meh not hard to fuck with
cheers for the kind words man
86xxx
24th August 2007, 12:54 PM
I'd say its either the bell housing is twisted in relation to the 20v or the engine is on a lean?
dr1ft-pig
24th August 2007, 02:34 PM
yeah not sure hey, once wiring is done i think ill take it down to clemo55's workshop and get it on the hoist
but on another note, got wiring started, the loom is installed into the car n shit, and all the wires are just taped to where they have to go as im not really game enough to cut anything yet, im gonna get a mate to come and actuall connect everything up n shit i just wanted to make a start on it

UPDATE!!! 18th september 2007
hey all i have finished coilovers and they sort of went well, first of all i had trouble with the threads in the struts and gland nuts aswell but i managed to get them in there very ghetto, i will be building new strut tubes when i get some good shocks as well but theese will work for the time being, also they dont go low enough so i need some shorter springs, and last of all i cleaned my shed so i can now walk all the way arpund my car without haven to step over anything haha
people who know me know i dont tend to clean up until things get really bad or i get really bored haha
anyways here are a few more pix, there will be another update tomorrow, interior paint will be done, cheers

24th September 2007, 09:24 PM
its fairly common practice to "shorten the strut" when converting to coilovers
basically you cut the threaded section off, cut a section off the tube then re weld the threaded section of tube back on. the external threaded sleeve ( the one off your banzaii coilovers) then is welded to the strut covering the joined section thus retaining strength.
you then merely user a shorter shock
ST185, AE92 shocks are a couple i can remeber
mine use ST185 KYB excel G's
retaining the standard length strut is why your car is a little high, shorter springs will cure this much the same as shorter springs would on a convential strut. stroke is somewhat reduced though and you can come close to bottoming out the shock which is why people build coilovers in the first place
good to see steady progress on this rig
stop breaking things :P:

I sujest ditching the stock trumpets though.
also sorry if I missed something but if you are not going to run boost why not "upgrade" to a T50? your car would be faster when done
why the rear brace?
which disk brakes are you going for?

yeah, stock trumpets will be ditched for T3 items when money allows as im strapped as for cash
na no boost, the reason for the w58 as it has an awesome 2nd gear ratio and is ALOT stronger than a t50, T50's are pure junk, if a half dead 16v can kill one in less than 3 months then a 20v will smash it easy as with the way i drive
rear brace was cheap so i bought it

with the T3 trumpets did you check at what revs they are tuned to? I havent yet myself but I suspecting they may be way too high.
Also whats your plans for filtration?
with the T50, I have hever heard of anyone breaking one with a non boosted engine. If you must have a W box I sujest getting ratios that suit the 20v better, ie: a W55. On the bright side you will probably make a profit doing such a swap.
With the brace if you like the look of it then leave it, it is just ballast though.
With the leads you can do what I did: get some OEM 20v leads or hyundai ones (they dont fit as well because they are longer though) and then just shorten them to suit. I have changed my coilpacks location 5 times now!! hehehehe. I think I have the final place now though. Apparently its pretty easty to get something custom made though, which I might do for my 7AFE head upgrade.
Also with the rear brakes have you considered corona disks? unless I am mistaken JDM rear brakes are 200mm or so and have a brake pad smaller than the side of a matchbox. Corona has a 280mm diameter disk but it has its downsides also.
Not trying to be negative or anything, I like your approch to your build and I would like to see where you are going with it. I am just trying to give some constructive sujestions, feel free to question my advice at any time, I am learning also.

to be honest i really didnt know there were tuned lenghts for intake trumpets, but hey u learn something new everyday
about the t50, i broke one lol so im not taking that chance again, most of the w series boxes have same ratios just the steel cased 58 which i have has a different 2nd gear ratio which is really long and was told by my mate who i brough it off that it was an improvement from the t50 (came from his improved production sprinter, was behind worked 16v) so going off what he has experienced with this box its going to be really good, but yeah i can kinda see where your coming from, going to a heavier box may drain a little power but not too worried, ive been thing about a beams 3sge instead of going 7age so that will come in around a years time after its back on the road (i have 2s* bellhousing to suit w58 t 3sge sitting here)
what do you mean by ballast??? sorry for my ignorance but in a yr9 dropout haha the brack should strengthen it up and make it a lil more rigid
i got some leads from a nissan terrano, they aren the best but it will work till cousin steals more from a car that "needs new leads"
na havent considered corona stuff, being a kouki diff the brackets wont line up so im going with the stock kouki brakes for now, once i get the car set up right i will be making a 2 way bracket and running 2 calipers on each side, 1 for normal braking and stock handbrake and the other will have a sticky set of pads and be run off a hydraulic handbrake of some kind
i dont think your being negative at all, i love it when people throw suggestions and hints/tips etc, its a good learning base as when someone tell me about something new, i read up on it, ive read your tech page heaps of times, since i have been on this forum, i have learnt a fair bit, and now doing this conversion on my own has made me learn so much which is why i always answer to tech Q's when i can..

Pretty simple really, one caliper is set up with normal brakes and cable handbrake, the other is a hydraulic handbrake, so a hydraulic system (independant to the brake system) with the cable handbrake just forgotten about (not used.).

When SamQ said ballast he was cheekily reffering to your strut brace as being nothing more than extra weight :P
JGTC cars have to meet a certain weight, so they often go below that weight, so that they can move the extra weight (ballast) around the car to optimise handling. Ie, weight distribution.

very supportive, although i havent driven with it yet i have sat in it and tried to move around and compared to my passenger seat it has 100x less movement
When SamQ said ballast he was cheekily reffering to your strut brace as being nothing more than extra weight :P[/b]
i see, i dont see why its just dead weight, i see it as a brace thats designed to do its job and rigid up th body a bit, seems to do its job just by grabbing onto it, its solid as
rthy
5th October 2007, 01:20 PM
intake uning: yes the length from the intake valve to the opening in the airbox/plenum has a significant effect on the power level and delivery, over 30% difference in power from what I have seen in dyno charts. I can show you the formular to work it out if you like. From memory the primary harmonic resonance in the intake happens at 6500 in a stock 20v after vvt is turned off. Shortening those trumpets will raise that, the T3 ones may lift your primary resonace to 8000rpm which is not a practical setting for your engine setup. In true American style they don't tell you that. When I was going for my blacktop/silvertop hybrid engine I was going to tune it to have a primary resonance with vvt at the same resv as what the car cruised on on the freeway. I think this corresponded to a 6200 rpm resonance with VVT off. But seeing I am ditching the 20v at this stage I will sadly lose any form of variable cam timing and therefore just have a single tuned point in my intake. So I will probably tune my intake for a primary intake resonance at 6500 and a primary resonance in the exhaust at maybe 7000.
rear brace: Bustin was ahead of me on an answer on this one, that brace is just dead weight unless you like a shiny ornament in the back of your car. Ok I really didn't want to go out of my way to show how something is completely no good because I don't want to be putting any down. However because it genuinely sounds like you want to know I will explain.
There are actually quite a few reasons why it just cant work:
- In a normal sprinter there are very little side loads in the rear shocker towers and very little bending movement in that part anyway.
- The movement there is is higher up and the section your brace is bolted to is just above a floor-panel for which there is a very thick subframe brace underneath.
Even if that section would move it doesn't really matter here's why:
- the two things on each side using that as a support is the spring and the shocker top. Neither one of these positively locate the suspension geometry. This is the job of the 5 links (or 4 for me), in regard to locating the tops of the springs and shocks the can move as much as they like providing that that isn't a significant change to their relative length which cant happen on any car that I can see.
- the movement in most ends of cars is only in mm unless something is wrong. That brace is bolted to sheet metal, I think it would easly be able to flex a few mm with the give in the metal before it would provide any meaningful opposing force.
- even if it was on a proper anchor point that brace by the looks of it is just a piece of aluminium pipe, again I think it would have much more give in it than what you might think. I will say though I am bias n this area and I think most of the braces coming out of Japan are cheap crap.
All that said your brace if it was a different design would do something if you had a Macpherson strut rear suspension which no sprinter does. Ontop of that there is a rear brace for a sprinter that does actually work. It bolts between the rear seat latch mounts, they can double up as a good harness mount too.
One last thing on the topic it may be my personal opinion but I think aluminium is a poor brace material and is used out of economic reasons, for me its cro-mo or nothing.
ignition lads: Nissan Terrano? How compatable are they to a 20v? this is a new one to me. As for your cousin hehehe what a sneak.
also I just said what i said before about being negative because I dont want to come across as someone who knows everything, thinks that everyone else is worse off or knows nothing worth knowing, because none is of this true.
As for my tech page, is that my cooling guide? I really dont get much feedback on that one so I dont know if people use it or not.
dr1ft-pig
5th October 2007, 06:10 PM
so the tuned length just kind of determines where the paek power will be in a way, if so id like that around 8500 and as for the brace, im not really too worried, i will be getting a rear brace made to go between rear seat latch mounts and have a harness mount on it
and yeah rear your cooling guide, its pretty good though i didnt really understand y u made a custom water pump etc, the external thermostat is a much easier idea although it may look a little bit rough, its effective and it works
rthy
5th October 2007, 08:49 PM
not directly where the peak power is but it can have that effect. The easiest way to imagine it is it shifts the whole power curve around.
With my cooling guide yeah I ground the blades of the pump a bit but I know that the external thermostat is the easier option. I was meant to rewrite the article to allow for that also but I never got around to it.
