Hey guys,
Looking at buying an RA60/65 coupe. Here's a few questions for all you celica experts.
What are the difference's between the RA65 and RA60?
Wanting to transfer bits for my ke eg. camber tops, nrca's coilover kit etc. What parts are compatible from a ke or Ae to an RA?
Is it true that ae86 roll cages fit RA?

Cheers,

Alex

60= live axle
65= irs

Most parts can be changed to ke/ae parts

IRS = win

ra65 has 2.4L 22re instead of 2L 21rc and irs

it would be better to coilover the celica struts instead of 86 struts to keep the bigger brakes

i wouldnt bother just stick with the rolla, but if you must you want a sa63 or ra65 and look at marvis or my members rides and you'll find what you wanna know.

Well,

RA60:
21RC engine, pretty rubbishy carbie truck motor essentially. Really nothing special.
T-series live axle rear end
W57 gearbox
The front lights tip forward

RA65:
22RE engine, bit better EFI motor essentially. Still nothing amazing (but how many cars came to Australia with an amazing engine).
F-series IRS rear end (pretty shitty design, gives toe issues when lowering, but people get around it[moreso just over it])
W5X gearbox (unsure exactly)
The front lights pop up.

Otherwise they are fairly similar cars. Both are a reasonably good candidate for a 1G conversion as a 1G motor usually bolts into anything with an R motor originally.

Most mechanical & suspension parts for an MA61 will bolt into an RA65, less so on the RA60.

That's some stuff to get you started.

Apparently we also got SA63 coupe's here too, but I've never seen one.

and bump steer like a mother fucker? oh hell no. there is no way to efficient to fix the suspension geometry 100% when you fix one issue it causes others (mainly angles of arms)

i run ra60 struts and rate them as complete and utter rubbish in the handling department, ive bump steered my way into the path of a land cruiser... to give you the low down ever since ive run above average tyres (adrenalines on the front, c drives on the rear) guaranteed the front end will lose traction (skip across the road any given distance) before the rear does

there are alot of people using celica struts successfully, maybe it was something to do with the driver...

ra65's get the w57 gearbox. I don't know about ke parts but I'm sure s13 stuff bolts in pretty easily. I know you can make s13 strut braces fit with a slight bit of filing as well as s13 coilovers which means it's quite cheap to get a good suspension package going.

Both the 21rc and the 22re are pretty shit motors. They don't like to rev and they run out of puff by 4 grand, anything more than 4grand and it just makes a lot of noise and loses a lot of torque.

They're a great car but the engine suppplied is just a peice of crap which is a real shame. Luckily the engine bay is huge and there have been quite a few engine conversions done to these cars. Both an 18rgeu or a 3tgteu conversion is pretty straight forward but if you really want some grunt to get moving go a 1g-gte conversion, been done plenty of times before and theirs a crap load of info on it on toymods.

Thanks for the info guys. On 7Tune.com theres an RA65 coupe with a 7Age. Whats required to do that conversion?

how the fuck is that anything to do with the driver? you turn into a corner, the suspension is at its limit and it bump steers. so if anything im capable of driving my car way past the limits of the ra60 setup

this rubbish suspension is in my ae86 by the way, heard several times that the standard struts in a ke70 have better geometry too

dude he is asking about using them in a celica, everyone knows celica struts in 86s and e7s gives bumpsteer, maybe you should learn to read?

Sorry Marvis, RA60.

Besides that, they look fresh. Just getting a bit sick of the corolla and wanting to get something else toyota, but driftable.

I must say and i am sad to type this but best bang for buck in any way you think about it s13 and 180sx's come on top no matter what. price, reliability, parts. aftermarket backing, and all in all drivability they are win but that is also if you don't mined being one of a billioun people in aus rocking one. thus i love my 86 :)

It's not a RA60 either. It's a 1984 A60 Toyota Celica.

Toymods have plenty of information on the Toyota Celica. Just buy one. They are pretty cool. Engine is terrible though.

What about an SA63 coupe? Do they have IRS or live axel? Clearly the 2S is shit house but I found one for cheap the other day. Any good?

jay70

sa63 has irs, just make sure its a manual, i've had a 3 speed auto 2s in a corona and it was slower than my ke70

I've got an RA60 with a 1JZ. Its been running this way for ~4 years.

You can fit S13/180SX coilover and brakes no problem. So a vast choice of coilovers and larger brakes for cheap:thumbup:

The RA60 is live axle, but can be easily upgraded to stronger diffs. I have an F series from a MX23 with ST141 disks. The IRS in the RA65 isn't exactly an engineering marvel, and struggles for grip when the car has lots of HP and is very low.

Lots of parts from AE86s are interchangable with RA60/65s, which is nice. Trailing arms and other front end steering components are some of those.

Their is not a whole heap of difference handling wise between them and a Sprinter. They are a little heavier and roomier, but that means 1JZs fit easily.
