hey guys need some advice.
I'm buying a car but the owner has lost the key.
i obviously need a key to move it and drive it.
should i
A- pay $153 for a locksmith to come and cut a new key.
B- chisel off key barrel and get a new barrel later from the wreckers.
or C- YOUR option lol

thanks in advance.

If it's a corolla, try any other corolla key from the same era.

If it's a sprinter, borrow another sprinter key.

They're normally super fucked out.

i wouldn't rely on that...

just pay the 152$, and get it done properly once

then when you get it, take it to a key cutter and get 2 others made

and keep one in a safe place at home :2thumbs:

tell the dude to drop the price by 150$, or if he wont, suck it up if you want the car that much:P

what ever you do DO NOT chisel it off, that will cost you alot more than 150$, since youll need to change the door locks and boot and fuel cap as well...

if its a corolla, you can pull the selector switch off the back of the barrell and just use a screwdriver to start it....

thanks ke70dave,

the guys is being fairly aggresive about the no key situation,
he's old and ethinc.
so it looks like maybe going halves in the cost would be the best option at this stage.
ill try my 71 key but wont hold my breath.
any other options

only problem with taking the selector out the back is you still are stuck with steering lock ;)

If its not parked too tightly just drag it up the trailer.

Sometimes with a bit of mucking around with jacks and blocks of wood you can turn the vehicle enough.

Then once home take the time to remove the barrel and take it to a locksmith.

i could probably take the barrel out where the car is now.
1- How long will it take? only ever done it on subarus
2- can it be taken out with the steering lock still engaged
3- I'm assuming the bolts holding it in will be the type with the blank head?

thanks

i got a barrel and key for about $120 last year
its about a 10min job fairly straight forward old 1 out and new 1 in

2- can it be taken out with the steering lock still engaged
yes i think u can press the pins in

3- I'm assuming the bolts holding it in will be the type with the blank head?
i am pretty sure it was easy to get around but i can't remember
but i do remember saying ''is that it? how is easy would this be to steal''

i would chase around for a key and barrel and just change it on the spot

i highly doubt youll be able to snap the steering lock... ive seen a 6+ foot guy try, and we swear the steering wheel was about to snap before anything came remotely close of breaking

worth a go

but we did that on bahnuggets ae86, and the key worked for all the doors but wouldn't turn the ignition.

ended up getting some guy to come out, mobile key cutter, he had some fancy computer program and somehow was able to get the stuff he needed from that.

30secs and 180$ later and he had a perfect key (this was a Saturday so he had some extra call out fee..)

new car coming julzy???
*Get a car trailer with a winch and drag it on.
*lift up the front end and tow it home. Then worry about the key lata. Plenty of keys chillen at center road PAP.

Call me re: this, can explain but cbf typing it all. Once you have the barrel out the code should actually be stamped on it. You just need to get into the car which is easy as pie when you know how it's done. No breaking shit and you're in in 10 seconds.

^^^
What he said, on 1 car i had (180sx) the barrell didnt have the key code on it, so i gave locksmith the barrell and the door lock, $50 bucks and i had a new key..

If the bolts have sheered heads on them, get a small cheisl and a hammer and just tap the head of it anticlockwise, there not normally very tight, so a couple hits should losen it enough to undo it with ur fingers.

just pulled the barrel out,
took it to a locksmith $24 later i had two keys.
and he said if it ever happens again then i can just read the code out and they can cut a new key.

you can snap the steering lock pretty easily on some cars, i;d suggest not doing this as the liock will pop back into the notch at the worst times you can imagine, causing you to crash into a telephone pole, tree or schoolyard.
