so my mate's grandparents have an old celica at their block that doesnt run and he and i are lookin to turn it into a track car, a drifter infact (of course).
we havnt decided whether or not to go ahead with it yet as we don't know heaps about them and don't know what sorts of things are good for them, etc.
does anybody know any links to decent build ups or frums based around them or even have one themselves that they can shed a little light on thier ways for me??
thanks :2thumbs:

well u'd be looking at a ra60/65
a 1jz is a fairly common conversion and so is a 7m

ra60's are sweet. they come with an r series motor and a steel case box (w50). the r series is useless for high revs (unless you can find an uber rare and incredibly sweet 18rg) however it does have torque. if you wanted to drift you could always weld the diff or because most come with a t-series you could buy a lsd of the shelf for it.
the 18r will spin shitty wheels no problem due to its torque, but you wont keep up with anything in a straight line. but before 'supra' engine swaps, keep in mind that the r series engines (8r, 18r, 22r, 22re etc.) are almost a cult favorite motor in the states as they were used in so many toyota pickup trucks.
There is so much info on US sites in how to tune these motors (carbies and head swaps {search along the line of " 20r/22r hybrid"}), and with the availability of these motors (in all old hiluxes and r series celicas) for dirt cheap at wreckers it would be a crime no to check this option out first. they will all bolt in and bolt up to your gearbox.
the stock 5 speed (w50 or steel case celica box) is a tried and tested favorite known to withstand v8 dragsters and the like, with drift it may eventually die, but it is probably the most common 5 speed rwd box getting round so not hard to replace.
the dori boys could guide you on a better suspension setup then i could, but id say it would be something like 10kg/7kg springs, kidney rattling shocks and all the bracing you can weld.
Ra60s already have good brakes. so other then that i would just get good front tyres, a smaller steering wheel, and take out everything bar the drivers seat.
RWD celicas are some of the most rewarding cars you can own, you can learn so much on them, have fun with it.

i had an ra65 for a while,
didnt do anything to it because at the time i knew sweet fark all about most things
but, depending on your budget first thing is first
get it running if you can, if it is an ra60 it will have a 21rc in it, 2 litre sohc carby poo motor.
if it is a ra65 then it will have a 22re in it, 2.4 litre sohc EFI, slightly less poo motor, but still nothing special
the 22re has mountains of torque and will spin the tyres a fair bit easier than the 21rc. if it is a 22re and it runs ok and you dont have the budget for an engine swap then stick with it for a bit.
suspension. im fairly sure front shocks that will fit an 86 will go into ra60/65 struts.
get some firm springs 8-10 for the front and 6-7 for the rear.
note that the ra65 has IRS rear end while the ra60 has live axle
so when you lwoer the car if it has the IRS it will gain a whole lot of rear negative camber.
aswell as all that theya re nice cars, they are alot more comfy and roomy than a ke, im actually looking for one at the moment as i want to get back to them.

Tim Ottaway had one built for drift. I thought it was a mad machine. Got me considering the chassis myself. From memory his had irs fitted or something like that, pretty sure he had a project thread running here.
Thats all the help I can be.

My ra60 parts car has 21rc with w57 alloy box. I believe all the Australian delivered cars (manuals) are equipped as such.
Wasn't the ra45 the last celica with 18rg?
