g'day iam putting my bigport 4age (bluetop out of a ae82) into my ae86 and everyone says to cut and shut the inlet manifold so that the air intake faces the front of the engine. i cant seem to find anywhere whether this is necessary because you cant get an airfilter onto the manifold if you dont, or whether it is just for better air intake? can anybody help with this :)

I don't think you would be able to make any kind of intake fit at all with the manifold facing backwards, and even if you could it would be restrictive and sucking hot air from your engine bay anyway. Cut and shut it to face the front, there's good reason why everyone does it.

you should also be able to get a rwd bigport manifold cheap enough to bolt straight on instead of cutting up the FWD one.

Here is a pic of my KE , the clutch slave is pretty much touching the inlet manifold as it is...

Even if you wanted to put something at 90 degrees it'd have to go across the back of the engine along the firewall and to be honest would look pretty ugly. That is assuming it will fit.

Only necessary on a smallport. As Paul said, RWD bigport manifolds are around.

My smallport:
