Bonjour!
Now, I have just bought another Peugeot 504 after a 13 year absence from Peugeot's. I grew up in Melbourne, and my Father was a Peugeot mechanic/nutter for 30 years, so I grew up in an exclusive Peugeot 504 household. Therefore, I have a soft spot for the great cars...
In my teenage years, I had many Peugeot 504's, and ended up having 4 at once. Being the late teenage age, I got the hunger for more powerful cars, and I sold up all the pugs, and got into Toyotas.....
I am 32 now. For years, I have wanted to get another 504, to modify into a track capable car... I have been searching for a good cheap one, as I didn't want to molest a nice 504...
Alot of people will be shaking their heads at this idea, but I am doing it to make something unique, and know I still have the appreciation of why they were such great cars.....
I have picked up a 1973 504 GL, White in colour, manual, very minimal rust (lifetime inland car), 326,000kms. The car is complete and runs well... Just out of rego.....
The plans for the car, will be a Toyota 1UZ V8 engine, W58 5 speed Supra G/box, Toyota AE86/RA40 coilovers (10kg spring, height and damper adjustable), Adjustable rose jointed Lower Control arms, adjustable caster rods.
Rear diff will be a VX commodore diff. They have mounts on the top of the diff in a similar position to the original Peugeot diff... I would have liked to use a Toyota diff, but their mounting points are totally wrong for this application. The rear brakes/hubs etc will also be from a VX rear cradle. Rear will have custom height and spring rate springs. (Stiff!)
I will be doing all the work myself, so I will update here of any work done.
EDIT: Plans changed, and the car will run a Toyota 1JZ-GTE 2.5L 6cyl motor
A bit of info for people who don't know these cars:
Production from 1969 to 2005! ;)
They were rwd, had 4 wheel disc brakes, IRS, MacPherson struts, rack and pinion steering and are very solid cars, but sedans still only weighing in at 1230kgs. Amazing car for 1969+ etc....
They are well known for dominating the rallys back in the day..... They are amazing cars on dirt roads and rough surfaces.
Great for towing, with a towing load rating of 2 tonne..... Very underpowered though.

Jo Jo you never cease to amaze ! But these are a cool cars , with features way before there time. I have never owened one but driven a few , including a highly modified one in the Wynns Safari . It did not finished the year I was part of the crew , but did a few years later when the course was not so 4WD only . This a way out there project and even though you are re-enginerring this beastie . You should talk to Jim Taylor , he was at the last hillclimb driving a Cleo with his son. He is a 504 nutter , had heaps of them over the years , he was the owner and builder of the Wynns Safari car. Also has an Historic rally one at present and does the long distance outback rallies , pretty sure he is doing it again this year. Worth have a chat with.

The car is road registered, Already got it put in my name with fresh rego last. I will be keeping it this way....... I have been enjoying daily driving the carfor the past 3 months, but now its off the road and work has started.
The front guards will have a flare, and the rear wheel arches will be cut and welded up to look like a normal car wheel arch... Also will have a flare.....
With my LCA's (lower control arms) I can run upto 60mm extra track at the front, and will have some pretty aggressive neg camber....

Here is a pic of the factory 504 drivers side steering linkage. I have already pressed the bush out in this pic, as it was stuffed. I was going to press in a new bush, and use this setup, but this is a pretty old fashioned style linkage, so I decided I would modify it to something to give a sharper steering feel.

I have cut the eye off, so I can weld on a threaded section so I could directly screw on a Toyota rack end.

Here is a pic of the top plate. Amazingly, 2/3 of the camber top plate bolts lined up EXACTLY with the factory Peugeot holes. The 3rd hole, I welded up and redrilled.

Steering is done, coilover struts are in, swaybar links done, braided brake lines done.....
Just got the adjustable castor rods/arms left to work out, and then the front is done.

I have finished the front end now.
I made up the castor arms. I will be make up some new ADJUSTABLE arms later on, but these will do for now.
I have used the Peugeot castor rods and modified the ends to suit the Toyota LCA.... The existing rod at the end I have modified was 16mm. The holes for the castor rod are 10mm. The hole are drilled IN the existing rod and I have welded on the extra bracing to be safe. The bracing is 6mm steel plate.

To give you an idea, here is a factory Toyota Castor arm compared to modified Peugeot arm.... As you can see, Toyota ones are adjustable from factory, 504 ones are not.

I finished off the front end. I am very happy with how its turned out. Although, this is as low as these coilovers go, so I will need to shorten them further, but that can wait untill later when I fine tune everything when everything is complete)

I picked up the diff setup ..
VX Commodore V8 5.7L (LS1) complete rear cradle etc, with factory LSD (3:07 ratio)

At this early stage, I have planned on using the Commodore diff centre, driveshafts, brakes etc, adapted to fit the Peugeot cradle etc..... But now I have the Commodore stuff here, I can really get stuck in to see what the best way to go about doing this..... I may actually be able use the whole commodore cradle modified to fit the 504 chassis... I have alot of work ahead of me
With my first measurements tho, the Commodore stuff is very wide, ie; the wheel mount face on the hubs are actually wider than the whole rear on the 504.... hahaha Massive flared guards would be needed.....

I have revised the diff idea. I wont use any of the Commodore cradle/trailing arms.
I am going to adapt the Commodore hubs/stub axle to mate with the Peugeot trailing arms, keeping somewhat factory geometry..... The custom length driveshafts will be made from cut down axles from commodore/falcon/R31 soild axle diff's, and re-splined at one end....

95% percent of people dont realise how good these cars actually handle. I can tell you, in standard form, the shit all over AE86s...... There, I said it. And I stand by what I say ;)
You only need to look at how much these cars dominated rallies for decades.......
Even with shit tyres, their road holding/cornering ability defies physics......

These things are NOT A FRENCH COMMODORE ! Make no comment unless you have driven one in anger ! . Particularly a modded rally set up car. They are quicker than you think both in handling and in preformance. If Jo Jo can retain/improve the handling and the added ompf of the 1UZ , this thing will be a drivers car (par excellence). Almost as good as a 1uz powered AE86 maybe ?????

Funny you mention a "french Commodore" Bob, but I am actually possibly considering the thought of a LS1 and T56 box...... :worried: :worried:
The price has come down on them a bit. At this stage, the engine choice will come down to what comes up at the right price, but I won't be 100% selecting a motor untill I have finished the Commodore rear drivetrain and rear suspension, as this is the hardest part of the build to get right.....
Making an engine fit will be the easiest part, so I am leaving it untill last

So, whats happening here, is that I am cutting a plate that will sit on the inside of the peugeot trailing arm, which the hub/bearing carrier will bolt onto from the outside. IE; the existing factory 504 plate will be sandwiched in the middle

Interesting choice of Vehicle I was looking at a 505 Peugeot some time ago with the intention of modifying that but never went any further than to think about it ..
I like your can do attitude & don't really mean to rain on your parade but as far as the welding of the castor arm's & the steering rack ends as they appear be cast iron is a real no no these days & no engineer would sign off on it & you would have no insurance if it broke & was the cause of an accident ..
Good choice on going the LS1 motor as they are actually smaller in size than the 1UZ & obviously a shit load more grunt

The castor arms are cast steel. The holes are actually drilled into the original casting etc... The "wings" I have welded on are just for a little extra bracing etc, but not essentially heavy load bearing..
I am not too concerned about the castor arms as such, but I would like to re-make the custom Peugeot -> toyota rack end piece. Since it is steel, welded to cast steel, and an essential steering component, I will be getting a whole new piece machined up by my machinist.....
I have measured up the LS1 I got and it is way too wide to fit....
I am going 1JZ-GTE now...... I have length in the bay, just not width, due to the 504 chassis rails..

Sorry guys, Its been a while since I've updated.....
Ive been busy building a few other AE86 track cars and didn't do much with the 504 for a while...
I have a Toyota 1JZGTE motor now.. This motor has some good fruit with it, and should have a power output of around 350kw at the wheels. The motor will run E85 fuel, and has a Garrett GT3540R turbo, with a custom .72 rear housing for good response to suit drifting. I have a very good steam pipe manifold with Tial external gate....
Engine will be run by a Haltech Platinum Sport 2000 ECU with custom loom done by Prowire in syd. Ecu has E85 Flex fuel sensor. Billet fuel rail, Turbosmart 1200 fuel pressure reg and 1000cc injectors...... The motor has standard internals, but is fitted up with ARP rod bolts and ARP head studs..... All Braided lines with Speedflow fittings...

The engine came with a Toyota JZ motor Rear sump.... I have sourced a JZ front sump, oil pickup etc and swapped it all over, so the sump will sit between the 504 crossmember and the sway bar

The front sump was from a N/A 2JZ, so i've added a turbo oil drain welded to the sump -

For the gearbox, I've gone with a Chev LS motor T56 Tremec 6 speed box, with a CRS JZ adaptor kit, and remote bleeder kit

yeah, its going to fit well. Been playing around with positions to get it right and think ive found the sweet spot...... Starting to make the mounts tomorrow..
