I am no mechanic ( this will become evident ) , but noticed on a video of my ae86 at the last hill climb , that ever time I corner hard I get a puff of blue smoke , sometimes a little bit , other times a smoke screen. Soon as I straighten up it goes away . Have a few ideas myself but thought I would through it open to the experts for a bit of advise on what is happening and what to do about it ???.
Engine is a 4age , big port , std cams , ecu etc.

its your tyres bro, not your engine

oil in the head. everytime you corner too hard it goes through the breather (into your intake manifold) and into your engine

that's what i think it is anyway. i remember reading about it on the toymods forum

Thats true, smallports have a oil return in the head to prevent this.
I would try a catch can and see how much it catches

While I've never experienced this, I too have heard old stories. When cornering oil in the head moves to one side and comes out the breather into the intake, burns and creates smoke.

Going from memory here, the 4AGE breather is on the drivers side cam cover, so it should fill up on lefthand turns. Is it only on lefts it happens? Or rights too?

In any case, an extra oil drain from the head may help, as may a catch-can (a bit of a band-aid solution). Though it depends of course on whether that really is the cause.

Good luck
Hen

Wish it was tyre smoke , it would mean real horsepower ... a Ke25 with a 4ag turbo was hosing me by nearly 5 seconds ( may be I am just a crook driver !!)
Any how back to the issue ... Oil is not over full ... oil drain is on RHS of cam cover .... but the smoke is worst on the right hand corners . Hillclimb has 6 right handers , so oil would be on the other side of the head . Also had a look at a recent motorkana I did and once again it was happening on right hand turns , just not as bad as the hill climb ??

If I try a catch can ... what,s the best way to plum it up ? I have been told not to return it to sump , just have a bleed to empty it now and then.

To see if it's just by-pass from the cam cover, get about 1m of 3/8 / 10mm clear tubing. Connect this from cam cover to inlet manifold, loop excess around engine bay, cable tie away from exhaust area. After each run/drive, check to see how much oil is coating the tube. Little oil means deeper motor issue, lots of oil means you need a catch can. Both of my RWD 4AG's never blew out through cam covers, yet one of my mate's did.
Very hit and miss issue.

This is probably the first 4A-GE problem I ever read about when I first signed up to the toymods email list back in 1996. Not sure what to do about it, other than change to a smallport engine or get a catch can. For this to happen, I recon you would be driving fairly hard. So well done for doing that.

Funny, was just reading about this problem on bills site the other day.

Thanks to all who responded .... I will try the clear hose at a motorkana this weekend . But looks like a surge problem , so I will have to track down a catch can. My 4age is differently a early version ( seen a bit of action I suspect as well ). And yes I am giving it heaps , car is a lot of fun to drive , responds well ( not so sure about the driver ).

Would love more power , so anyone with a high horsepower N/a engine that they want to sell for next to nothing , I am available to purchase. I bit stingy I know but I am semi retired at the moment ( ie not working ! )
Regards to all.

BAD NEW FOR ME .... ENGINE BLEW WHITE SMOKE ON 1 RUN .... HUGE PUFFS OF BLUE SMOKE ON 3 RUNS , ALL DURING HEAVY CORNERING .... MOSTLY ON EARLIER RUNS IN THE DAY .... ON THE OTHER 8 RUNS NO SMOKE ?????? I warmed up the engine before each run , engine doesn't get hot . I ran 2 meters of clear pipe from rocker cover to inlet , not a trace of oil , bit of condensation that's all . motor ran strong , revved freely too god no's and was pulling like a train.

Suspect if I don't find the problem this may end in tears......
Any one else got a Theory or suggestions .

Could it be happening when you just come off-throttle?
My car blows heaps of blue smoke when coming off/going on throttle... like changing gears or hitting the limiter.

You can see it in some of my vids...
Hillclimb: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtLxsQ_Mf-s
Motorkhana: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeVcJxCHuNM

Far as I can tell its just my piston rings that are buggered. Never bed in properly.
Of course I'd welcome any other cause. Cos I don't wanna pull it apart... Again. :P

Yes I get the same smoke as yours on run off , but the large amount of blue smoke only happens now and then and its enough to hide the car till it clears. Looking at my video's it's on acceleration though.

If it's mostly happening when backing off it'll probably be stem seals, I'm changing mine soon.
