OH MAN I MADE IT WORK. HERE ARE SOME PICTURES.
One of the nuts welded to the inside of the chassis rail to mount the towbar to snapped off. This will be very fun to remove, cutting the bolt will be the easy bit, getting the rest of it out of the rail not so much.

Car is at the painters shed now. Bare metal respray time. I'm still wrestling with my phone to get it to communicate with my computer so no pictures yet.
