3S-GTE water lines

hi all,

need to know if i can do without the pipes that go from the back of the waterpump around to the back of the head.

i have also attached a picture of the pipes.

well I don't know 3SGE engines but I do have a rough idea how Toyota do things.

top pipe: definately the water bypass pipe. This circulates hot water when the engine is cold and the thermostat is closed. Getting rid of this will mean that the water will be stagnant inside the block till it heats up. Although far from idea many people have done this without an issue. Some drill a few small holes in the thermostat to keep the water going.

bottom pipe: water outlet very likely going straight to the heater core. Going to run a heater?

i chopped mine down. Top one to rear water outlet, bottom to heater, which will need to be tee'd back into the bypass

if you live in qld i wouldnt bother with a thermostat

I have to strongly disagree with the above, a thermostat lets all the engine tolerances be in spec not just let the engine warm-up quicker.

top pipe at back of motor or at water pump?? they swap over by the rear of the motor.

The pipe with the 5/16 barb out of it (bottom pipe out of the pump but top pipe toward rear of motor) is the main coolant return. Spent water from heater, throttle and turbo if fitted connect to this. Other pipe is the bypass as Sam said. smaller 1/2 in pipe pointing down near oil filter is oil cooler supply, comes from the block. the small 1/2 in under the water pump is the oil cooler coolant return.
