is the cheapest way into rallying, and it still cost him every cent he had

Maybe get a nice shitter to thrash around. Find some dirt/offroad khana/hillclimb type events. These are pretty cheap, and you dont need much of a car to compete.
Then from there as your skill grows youll meet the right people who can help you head in whichever direction you want.
Agreed with above post.
Most Car Clubs will do these sorts of events atleast once a month, which means you do get quite a few attempts through the year. Also, for motokhana and khanacross, there are no special car regulations, as long as it passes scrutineering, then you can drive, and, for yourself, all you need is a L2NS CAMS licence and a club registration, which I think works out to be about $80 in total a year. Basically all you need is an ADR approved helmet, full cotton clothing, and a fire extinguisher fixed in the car. really great fun doing these events too. Depending obviously on your location, the khanacross can actually be a fair distance and you may even hit 3rd gear!
Obviously from there if you want to step up to state level rally, then it become a fair bit more expensive. Full cage, class rules and regs etc. But I guess if you have the time, skill and ultimately money, then go for it. Would be nuts cracking through forests legally

what about roll cages, legislation, etc? do you need that stuff to be able to compete in rallys? I have a stock ST185 and was wondering how much would need to be spend to get it in rallys
Who can recommend to me the best broker among those in the list on this site?
