well a multimeter or any volt gauge is your best bet. 12V when off and 14.5 or so when running. As for your warning lights I dont know
I picked up my 86 a few weeks back, JDM version, when i got the car i noticed none of the warning lights on the right hand side of the meter panel worked, apart from the charge light would flicker when cranking the car to start.
The car seemed to be charging and was running fine so I wasn't in a rush to get the meter lights working, until yesterday while driving the Charge light, and rear brake warning light came on and wouldn't go off, also when using the headlights, the headlight warning light came on.
This morning thee car struggled to crank and fire, i had to make a short drive to get the Mrs to work, when i got back i whipped a lead off the battery to see if the alternator was doing its job and the motor died, I have checked the charge circuit fuse and wiring from the back of the alternator, it all seems to be intact.
I assume the alternator has packed up but would this explain the other warning lamps I'm getting and is there anything else i should be checking.
sorry for the long winded explanation
Cheers

very simple things but thought i would mention them.
check your water level on your battery cells.
check the condition of your fan belt, if it is old and stale replace it
also check the alternator bolts/bracket are firm, make sure its actually spinning your alternator.
^^^^^ what sam said use a volt meter to check if that baby is charging
as for your dash warning lights, might be spliced wires/loom problem or the actual bulbs in your speed need replacing. get your dashboard off and have a gander
