    Default Brake upgrades.

So basically I've been staring at my computer for hours now tryin to find a BUDGET brake up grade for an 86 and am have ZERO luck....

Basically every where my searchs took my they were all sayin the same thing.
    RX7 calipers and XX disc.

I really don't want to spend $1000 on my brakes.

    Is there a simple option.???

Making a new caliper braket is no dramas.... I have a very capable machinist friend. And looking at the ones that AJPS sells. they are very simple. (not that it could make them that good looking

I might pull my s13 brakes off tomorow and check some measurements to see if they can be adapted.
But i was hoping you guys had an easier solution...

And please don't say "just use JDM disc's and calipers" NO NO NO..
Thats barely qualifies as an upgrade..

    Hope you can help.

Unfortunately there are no cheap, easy bolt on upgrades. There are some reasonably easy though. Options I'd look at:

    - XT130 strut, RA60 hub and disc, MX62 caliper, a little machining.
    - RA60 strut, hub and disc. Sigma lower control arms to fix camber. Live with the slightly longer steering arms.
    - XT130 strut, Peugot disc, Hilux calipers. May be a bit heavy.
    - FC calipers and DIY adaptors. There should be dimensioned drawings around for the adaptors you can make, otherwise I might be able to dig them up for you too.
    - Custom bracket to suit any caliper you like. Unfortunately the hole spacing and shape of the brake mount on the AE86 strut is a bit weird, but anything can be done.

But even for one of the more simple brake upgrades, the price starts to add up once you include changing struts, discs, calipers, pads, maybe a master, etc, etc.

Ahh... I forgot to add that I JUST bought new coilovers for the car so different strut option is a no go.

Will have a closer look tomorow have some spare struts here I can mess with.

    Default brakes

    Hey

I have not done this myself so i dont know the ins and outs BUT i bought my sprinter with magna rotors and commodore calipers on the front (and a disc brake rear end) I have never had a look at a standard sprinter set up but it does not look like there was much work to get this set up to work. this means cheep rotors and pads and a pretty big dia rotor which is the important thing with brakes (go have a look at a super doopa porche or audi and see how big those suckers are!) note with this set up i have to run 14inch wheels as the 13's hit the calliper.

sounds very much like the setup they use on early datsuns. If you have the right datsun strut to start with its basically just a bolt on job. no caliper brakets and stuffing around like that...

I'm not sure if you could fit a datsun strut in an 86 though.
The suspension design is VERY similiar mind you.

    Can you get a photo.??

If you don't mind making a bracket, and you have a very capable machinest, then your in luck! No need to even ask the question.

How about front brakes off any Camry or Tarago you like.

I once used front brakes off a early Tarago, YR20/YR22. The Tarago hub is the same 4 stud pattern. The Tarago hub has the same bearings as the XT130 and Celica. So I ended up using XT130 struts, Tarago hubs and disks bolted on. And I made brakets for the calpers. It is a 254mm (10") disk x 20mm thick (vented). Worked very well. Fits in 14" rims. I still have this in the shed, can sell it for cheap.

1000 bucks is cheap as fuck for the braking performance the FC's will bring. Combine with JDM rear disc brakes or Corona rear disc conversion and that will be all the braking power you will ever need.

Aftermarket kits from AP Racing, Willwood and the likes will cost you upwards of 3000.

I got this setup with some cheap coilovers and changed them onto my good ones. It had custom backing plates and spacers.

dude if you have a capable machinist then what is the problem?
get some cheap calipers form ebay like nissan 4pots, s13's, wrx 4 pots, etc etc
make the bracket and buy some rotors?
the rotors are really the only other major expense, but can be had for about $100 each from RDA or even cheaper 2nd hand.
$500 will get you some awesome brakes.
