Thanks mate.. Better than not having a go at all I suppose (Definitly cheaper anyway!)

I finished one side of the loom.

Don't know if i should solder the other side yet or not or wait till the engine is in so I can feed the middle of the loom through the firewall instead... This wire i used is a fair bit thicker than the stock wiring...

    cheers mate

I took the power steering, exhaust manifold and A/C off the 4age as you can see and had a bit of a look at the cams etc in there its pretty dirty, what do you think? seen worse? what's a good way to clean it?

I couldn't help myself.. I had to do it, just wanted to see how it looked:

Gave the engine a bit of a clean to get it ready for the swap, it said on the degreaser bottle not to use it on aluminium, so any suggestions on how to get it all nice and clean? At least now I can actually see myself in my cam covers if I ever have to, it's so smooth.. turned out way better than what I thought it would.

Inside looks fine. A little bit of minor caking, but have seen a lot worse. The varnish is typical of an engine which has had oil left a little too long between changes (maybe a month too long each change, can also happen with cheaper oils too) - compared with worse cases where the oil did not get changed for extended periods and carbon began to form in spots (caking). Engine looks typical of somthing that has done about 150,000km.

Just give it a minor clean to remove any loose carbon. A good oil can clean it up to, but will still have the varnish. Just make sure you pull the sump off and clean it up inside to get rid of any sludge build up.

The guy said it had done just a bit less than that, okay cool thanks, so I should not use degreaser and just use engine oil to clean it instead? and a kitchen wire scourer? Is degreaser bad for it? I used to use degreaser on my old cars engine to give it a general clean on the outside, sorry for the questions but I really don't want to fuck this 4age up..

I would just use some solvent on a rag (thinners, petrol, carby cleaner etc) and remove what you can. Under the cam covers (as in the covers them self - not the engine) if there is any caking, use carby cleaner on it and a small paint brush to loosen any carbon. Note that carby cleaner eats paint so it would have been better to do it before you painted the covers. When you run the engine, the oil should do some minor cleaning (but as said before, it looks ok so i wouldn't worry about going too in depth).

I already cleaned the inside of the cam covers with degreaser, it is sparkling clean bare metal now and i sanded the outside, Washed it with a gurni before I painted it. Used Caliper paint from supercheap that I already had lying around.. I'll repaint it black once the engine is in i think and have excess cash but that is not really important at the moment.

I took my intake manifold off today and took at to someone to get it cut and shut

Ive got a shit load of thinners at the moment so I'll just use that on and around the cams then. I was just worried about damaging something that I might not know about... Thanks!
