Hey all, ive been playing with my dizzy since my old one was leaking from the inside and things arn't ok. 1st of all when i got the car back in the day it had a rwd (side leed mount) cap on it, and then changed it to a fwd(top mount) because of stuff.
Now i got a new dizzy that had a rwd cap on it but was sold to me with out the cap. I made the cap i had (fwd) fit even tho only 1 bolt is holding it and dialed in the timing, the problem now is im not gettin full revs. Before with the 1st and 2nd dizzy this wasnt a problem but with this 1 it is. Tomorrow i will be buying a new cap for it but has anyone else had this problem and knows what it is?
Also the cap/leeds are facing weird, they are on a 45deg between the bonnet and the firewall nearly on top of the headers.... Could heat soaking be the problem or that everything is slightly out?

Spent all day working on this stupid bucket of rust and now it runs worse than i started!!!! After getting the shits with the new dizzy i decided to put the old one back in because at least it worked fine, but after hooking it all back up i couldnt get the timin good. I would get it running set it at best timing position turn the key off and try to start it again and the pos wouldnt run! Sounded like it was on 2 sometime 3 cylinders. Then after a few more cranks it would start up great and then run like poo.
Has anyone got a clue? Someones got to know something?

Thanks for the help so far guys......
I found out more, you start the car get it running sweet n then turn it off and the timing it was set at moves
mecanicaly the motor is good all points line up to TDC and the key way is not the problem. Ive disconeccted the ecu over night to reset it, but was wondering a busted trigger will do what, Jump the timing around? or not fire at all?

    ANY! help would b great

    wreckers?

go pinch a cap off another 4age (assuming youve got one) and observe the way that its set.

Or go to superbarn and look up the part #?

have you checked that there is no arcing ? when dark maybe check there isnt a hairline crack that you can see ignition voltage jumping on a lead, cap etc . And check the coil isn't cracked shorting out to a terminal . But how can the mechanical timing move ? is the dissy missing a roll pin setting the gear locked to the shaft ? you have to go though the timing and operation one by one as no difference in caps should change the mechanical timing point being different each time the engine rotates . Barring all of this you have a ignitor vs dissy vs ecu miss match problem , tps or about a hundred other things it could be . You might even have two problems at once .

Yeh there is no arcing, cap is a brand spanker.

The way it goes is, you set the timing to 10bdtc get it running sweet and then turn off the engine and try to run it again and it will move to 20atdc.... Then try it a few more times and it will go back to 10btdc. Ive had the ecu disconected over night so it should have reset. Now to try to work on it still abit pissed dam that was a good night

Ahh 20' now we are getting somewhere

So i am guessing that you didn't short terminals T and E1 to be able to set the timing without the advancement by the ecu ? then timing it

Have you got a manual ? and timing light ?
