I've been toying with the idea of buying a cheap AE86 for racing - looking at the prices that local examples are going for, the word 'rip-off' comes to mind! I checked a couple of Jap import sites and they seem to have pretty good examples with starting prices under $400AU!

Has anyone imported one? I dont need to worry too much about registering it for road use as it will be primarily a track car.

    $400 is cheap I know!

But shipping fees are the killer $3500-$4000

Then compliance and rego after that.

Ive seen R32 GTR's go for under $5k

If you are going to keep the car as a dedicated track car, then it may be worth doing, becasue compliancing is really expensive.

Then you have to see if the car has the right amount of mod:$$$ ratio, ie like wieghing up how much has been spent, if anything.
Becasue if you look around in Aus there are quite a few cheap sprinters with all the goodies.

But to buy say in the Auctions you must be a registered buyer.

Which pretty much means that you have to go thru an importing bussiness.

And of course Importers want a cut too..

Yeah shipping would be the killer on a cheaper car I suppose

I'm not after anything special as far as condition goes, a few mods would be handy but I would be developing it up myself for the track anyhow. I currently race my road registered WRX and looked at importing a WRX for racing but I need to start being realistic as to how much money I put towards my 'hobby'. After watching the Best Motoring Hot Version episode with the AE86 racers - I suddenly got an urge to get one of these little beasts, thinking it would be a cheap fun alternative! But they appear way overpriced for what they are!

Man i tried importing one about a year ago for $10000 through an company in melbourne and i tried for 5 months with no luck. Also if you ask alot of people you will find out there not as cheap to set up as you may think companies like to rip us AE86 guys off.

^^^^^ damn right . IMO buy an aus spec with mayb a 20v or 4agez. something twin cam already and with sum goodies and take it to the track then, slowly delvop it to your taste and style. way cheaper no headaches from importing.

I imported mine privately bout round this time last year. It cost me in total landed roughly round $9.5k. Bought it at an auction for 400,000 yen which is roughly round $5-$6k which wasnt too bad. Shipping was round $1k, commission to the broker round $800. But as the others mentioned the stamp duty and import fees is what will get ya. it'll take bout 2 months to arrive too. Hope that helps.

My bro and I are thinking of importing a couple more soon. seeing that a lots of examples have popped up in the auctions.

    from what your saying,
it sounds to me like you would be better off finding a local stocker off an old lady and starting from there, u will get one for 2k in pretty good nic.
like evryone is saying it really isnt worth importing one unless it has a long list off modifications, because a cheap one over there becomes an expensive one by the time it lands.
