Today I received my new 100kw 4age engine which is going to replace my old 4ac in my sprinter. The only problem is the harmonic balancer has a big chip in it.
I don't plan on running the power steering pump or the a/c.
Can I use this without a problem?
Can I use my old 4ac harmonic balancer?
Should I get a new one I have been quoted $239?
Any other options?
From the looks of it it wouldn't affect it, however youd better off seeing what else people have to say about it.
Pretty sure one of my 4a's has chips around that size anyway.
Dont buy a brand new one second hand are way cheaper. Is the $239 just the balancer or are you getting it put on at a work shop.
If you arent running a belt on the front section it shouldnt be a problem but if you can get a cheap second hand one you might as well replace it while the motor is out of the car. Not sure about the 4ac one though somebody will be able to tell you if they are the same.
dude i'd get a new one for sure balance in a motor is a big thing it can f*ck out your bearings do all kinds of stuff just try find a second hand good one or shop around some more you probably find you'll get one cheaper

Thats just for the balancer.
I also found some information about the 4age balancer on this site but it didn't help me much.
Just running stock I believe it won't be something of much concern, if you're building a race one then it'd be something to point out.
no matter what a 4age in an ae86 is gunna rev at 7500 or 8000 and he'll be reving it for sure old mate with his 4ac might not have a problem but for the $200 or so while the motor is out its alot easyer to do if it were me id do it
Ive got a new one ready to go on mine. Mine currently has more chips then that and its ok but i am still going to replace it once i can undo the bolt holding it on

All I know is that the supra club were having guys tearing half their motor out when their balancer spat the dummy at 7000rpm.
I would just go genuine, if your doing a replacement engine it would be wise to do the timing belt at the same time therefore saving you time and hassle later down the track.
To my belief the harmonic balancer is built to absorb crank shaft vibrations, without one would probs see premature wear to the crank, some newer cars dont have em as they have double layered flywheels (forgot the proper name for them) but from looking at that pic its your crank pulley thats damaged/chipped , the harmonic balancer is a rubber like ring that sits behind the crank which acts like a bush
