Hey mate,
Take advise from someone who has checked alot of 250cc bikes for first time riders.
If you want something to commute on and also have a blast on the weekend get a 4 cyl 250cc. Zxr 250, Cbr 250, or a FZR 250 if your a taller person (longer reach to the bars). They are all old but take someone who knows what they are talking about to check the motor, bearings, brake discs and pads. I used to commute on a CBR and it was fine. You should be able to pick one up for about 3-4k if you look around enough.
If you want a commuter only go for a twin with a comfortable sitting position, like a ZZR 250(parrarell twin), GPX 250(parrarell twin), VT250 (Also known as a spada, v-twin) or a VTR 250 (v-twin and a newer model).
These are more transport orientated.
Go and ride a few different ones and see what takes your fancy.. All in all it doesn't matter what everyone says on the net. Choose the one that feels good for you.
Cheers mate, thats exactly the info I was looking for, some different options and things to look for on the older bikes.
No Worries..
Good luck and make the choice that feels confortable to you, not anyone else..
well i got my licence about a month ago and also bought a zx2r. most fun i'v had in ages. the bike seems really good and i got it for a good price so im happy.
stroked 2L ca18-ae86 in the build...eta xmas 2012?
Know so many people considering a bike these days, myself included. QLD peeps get up to 600cc straight up, so 250's should come down in price a bit. Scary to think you could ride an R6 the day you get your license.
Depends what happens with my home situation... If I don't need to cart my dog around in the morning and I can commute on a bike, think I might have to consider it. Fortunately I have a bike mech as prolly my best mate, so searching would be easy. I usually car pool with my mum, haha, but getting from my place to hers while the Aristo is cold and likes revving to get to operating temp is rather costly.
