Thermos really only work when the car is moving at very low speeds or stopped, ie in traffic. Once the car is moving and the radiator has some airflow going through it they are pretty much redundant. More important would be a nice thick alloy radiator to replace the stock unit and a proper shroud made up to direct air into it.
I've found the best setup to keep the radiator cool is usually a stock clutch fan setup and shroud. Clutch fans suck through stupidly huge amounts of air and with the shroud will draw air right across the entire core because of the low pressure they generate on the engine side of the radiator.
Also a good idea to give the whole cooling system a good flush and top it up with some good fluid to raise the boiling point.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (intense @ Aug 31 2008, 03:55 AM) </div>yes but thermo fans 'free' the engine up so to speak. less load, revving faster etc. elec fans can cool as good, and better then clutch fans and heat soak still occurs when the cars moving (hence vented bonets and bonet lifts).

buy a thermostat/relay switch from jaycar and a elec fan from wreckers or bursons/repco/etc and throw it in with some new coolant and a colder engine thermostat and you'll be laughing. might cost $100 depending on what you get.

I had twin thermos on my rx7 and it was heating up too much when I took it drifting, every 3rd lap or so I'd have to baby it a bit and let it cool down. Wouldn't cool down at all when just idling. Swapped back to the stock clutch fan and shroud setup and it never went over 100 degrees and the temps dropped when idling as well as cruising. There was a slight power loss but nothing bad

jsut get the best of both worlds

and get a fan off a FWD car

that has the shroud and everything, and is also electric

    egsample:

its true that a thermofan wacked on the front of a radiator isnt going to cool as good as a proper shrouded friction fan. but its also true that taking off the fan and adding an electric one will free it up.

i have a single supercheap auto fan on my radiator, and it rarely comes in (jaycar temp controller set to come on at 85degress), and when it does come on it cools it down reaalllyy quick....

you can't compare a poorly set-up/low quality elec fan with a stock clutch fan and shroud. the shroud is what will have made the difference not the clutch fan.

also (particulary for rotors) if the car remains hot while idleing etc. an oil cooler would help to keep temps down.

Try parrots solution of a sv21 (?) camry, 2vz-fe option, radiator and fan. Bonus is the bottom mounts (use 2xae82 driver side) will weld inside of you stock ae86 mounts, and the radiator fits with no other mods. It's huge, twin core and has a twin speed thermo fan and an a/c fan attached. I just got another one from the wreckers for $70 2 days ago. In/Out hoses are in the right spots, and only need an adapter for the In as ae86 is 31mm and camry is 34mm. No shrouds or fans for a while and it did a great job of cooling my 4ac around melb and then from melb to brissy.

As a bonus it has a tranny cooler in the bottom, which could be used for running your oil if you can't be arsed fitting a full oil cooler.
