75 ke30 corolla with a 4efe using corona centres and either 15" or 14" band.. 8 " but i want grip and nothing else so the 14" 185/55 would outgrip a 15" with 195/50 presuming same type of tyre?

ok no way to the 185/55 it smaller than my current tyre. my external rolling diameter is small enough..
so if anything i'd like to go bigger on the rlling diameter.. fill the guards a bit more.

i currently have 185/60/14 with a diameter of 22.8"
if i go 195/50/15 it has the same diameter 22.8"
since i want to go a bit bigger then i have a chioce of

195/60/14 with a dia of 23.2"
205/50/15 with a dia of 23.1"

the extra contact patch on the 15 will give more grip but the extra sidewall of the 14 could promote more as well.

What will a 195/60/15 should give you enough side wall? But 15s would look a bit weird on a ke30 I think.
But you are right you want a bit of sidewall so it flexes a lil in the corner.

15's look good on kesevs looks good on ke30 as well... mine has kesev arches after all lol.
so i'm just curious as to whether i should go for the extra contact patch or the extra sidewall.

Derpppaaaa me herrpppaaa. What tires should I go for my corolla, it's pretty low, 15x9's on the back and 8's on the front. At the moment I have 195/55 on the front and 205/55 or maybe it's 50 on the back, it looks super duper muscle car spec, really weird. I'll post pics in a sec, FYI the front will be lowered this weekend.

I'm confused what it is you are actually trying to achieve... First saying your primary goal is grip, then concerned about the aesthetics of 14's vs. 15's when you are planning banded steelies based on stock rims??? Then you are talking about benefits of stretching a 185/55 on an 14x8 or 195/50 on 15x8. Then keep referring to overall diameter as a comparison profile and sidewalls :/

More than anything the mechanical grip of the tyre will relate directly to width (hence contact patch) and the type/compound of the tyre itself. The sidewall/profile and construction will effect the way the tyre behaves to an extent, but so will many other things from tyre pressure, temperatures, suspension setup and the dynamics of the car itself. Remember a wider wheel & tyre is heavier, more work to rotate/stop and on a light car can compromise handling.

You mention it's for a KE30 with 4EFE? So we're talking about a 750ish kg car and a 1.3l motor with maybe 100 odd hp... Leaf spring or 4-link rear? Coil-over or std strut front?? IMO you could run even 13x7's and semi slicks (appropriately sized to get the rolling diameter you want) and have more than enough grip, equal to or more than either 14's or 15's. If you are thinking of skimping on alloys with heavy widened steel rims, are you going to use cheap tyres or second handies and expect grip?

Have a look at the Sharp boys in IPRA (KE30's with 20V 4AGE and 3SGE etc 160-200+ hp) They run Advan A048R's in 185/60 on 14x7. So your thing will handle great on a similar setup and look good too. You could run staggered sizes 7's on front 8's on back with 195/60's if you're really concerned about grip. But with 100hp it will be way over-tyred (even with street-sport spec rubber - not even semi-slicks) Likewise 15's & 50 profile will give a firmer feeling ride with stiffer sidewalls but may look big on a KE30, but that wasn't the question... or was it?

Has got xt130 control arms on front
yr22 f series diff which is about 25mm wider in total than a standard diff
standard guards rolled lipped if needed

looking at 15x8 or 15x8.5 ssr reverse mesh with a nice offset not sticking out too far but dished
tyres 195/50 or 195/45

Wow people put serious thoght into tire size!! I usually always go for 185/55 0r 185/60 from 8.5j to 10j done loads track days with these sizes never had any problems with grip/stability etc provided the tire is a good brand...

On my road car
Front ssr mk1 14x9.5j -28 225/40/14 (trying these i think they look sh*t) Standard flared arches Coilover 8kg spring no rubbing
Rear ssr mk2 14x9j -12 185/55/14 Standard flared arches cut trd springs 6kg with trd blue shocks no rubbing


Track car
Front ssr xr4 14x8.5j-25(not sure exactly) 185/55 standard flared arches Coilover 8kg spring no rubbing
Rear ssr mesh 14x9 -28 185/55 standard flared arches tokico rear shock and spring unsure of spring rate most likely 6kg rubs when bounced off apex's and stuff
