you muppet
Boring back story. Really, who reads these things?
After scouring Gumtree, eBay, Tradingpost and Carsales religiously in search of either a 2.0 MK2 Escort; 2.6 Sigma Scorpion; E30, 323i Coupe; L20B Datsun coupe; or a cheap, rough MX5 and not finding anything in my price range of $2500 (base purchase), after a few months I'd actually started to give up on my search for the time being and learn to enjoy my BA4 Prelude. Yeah, I know. Impossible, right? FWD Honda garbage.
Wednesday afternoon I received a call from my dad asking If I had seen the 320i E30 on Gumtree. I hadn't but being the interweb troll that I am, the page was in front of my eyes before he could even hang up the phone.
The ad read:
Being a four door sedan and only a 2.0, it wasn't exactly what I was after but it did meet the rest of my criteria for an E30; 6 cylinder, 5 speed and cheap, so I messaged broseph to see what was up.

Plans:
As this is my daily, I don't plan on doing any thing crazy to it. Don't think I will even put wide, low offset wheels on it. The OEM "Bottle cap" alloys look fine on a lowered car with nice rubber and that's pretty much all I plan to do.
H&R Race Springs (Front: 5.6kg/mm - Rear: 9.8kg/mm) Rear spring rates are effectively halved on E30's due to the nature of their semi trailing arm IRS design.
Bilstein Sport dampers all round.
Bilstein Sport and H&R Race.
Miller MAF Conversion to remove the barn door style AFM. Claims to free 10 strangled ponies.
BTB copy exhaust headers from Hot Tuning.
When I give the M20 a rebuild, I'm going to stroke the 2.0 to 2.3 using the crank and pistons from a 323i. I'd like to use my head to do a 2.7 stroker on a 325e bottom end but for registration/license purposes I'd rather retain the stock block and engine number. It would also be interesting to see what I can get out of the M20 with 80mm bores because most people ditch them in favour of a 2.5 motor, or a DOHC 24v from an E36, or M series BMW.
4.10 LSD.

you like expressing every detail dont you
plans for wheels?
so cheap for what it is too!
I have another 320i Coupe, that for some reason can't be registered in SA and therefore will receive the track treatment. It's hektik dark metallic purple, fully gutted with Suzuki GTI seats and a GK Tech wheel/eBay boss kit at the moment but will probably be getting a Holden 5.0 and T5.

nice get some pics.
are the coupes imports?
Those plans are definitely on the cards. The normal "i" lip is missing and PO painted the front valance black, so that's definitely going back to white. I want a black "is" lip , I like them colour matched on every colour but white.
First up is the H&R Race and Bilstein Sports, though.
Pictures, as promised. Just some crappy cell phone pics taken in the car park at Matsuri today.
More pics coming after the valance is painted white and I put my Coupe's "i" lip on.

Get better tail lights!
Put up the track car. That'll be more interesting than a daily driver.
Nice deal on the car though. I been looking at E36 and nothing's cheap enough to grab for a hack car.
This thread will end up being about both vehicles but I haven't taken any pictures or done anything to the two door yet. It might be a few months off though, as I'm building my AE86 and fixing up this daily first.
The coupe is a 1988 320i. It came with Super Pro trailing arm, and lower control arm bushes. It was missing the pin and bushing for the shifter linkage, which I purchased from Pelican Parts for about $15, (BMW wanted over $100). It has no AFM and the steering rack is bent, however, I will be doing a MAF conversion and swapping the steering rack with one from an E36, as they're 3.2 turns lock to lock, opposed to the 4 turns lock to lock on the E30. It feels like you have to turn the steering wheel over 9000 times when doing a 3 point turn.
As of yet, I can't really call it a "track car". It's more than a few months away from seeing one but that's all it will ever see due to the Nazis at Regency.
In regards to white car.
Found an M20B23 for the crank and pistons and a 4.10:1, open, small casing diff. Should be getting them both this weekend.

pull your bumpers off (2 allen key bolts under each bumper), unscrew the black corner trims (1 screw under each corner trim), unclip the black centre trims (just pull out after the corner trims are off) and paint your bumpers white whilst your at it. will make the car look awesome.
you can buy IS lips for $150 or less posted to your door off american ebay these days. i was selling them on australian ebay before the americans started selling direct to us. better than paying $350 to bmw for one if they can manage to find one themselves in stock in another store.
leave your rear lights, i like nothing but period and series correct lights on any car or it looks too ricer.
pull the wing off, use no wing or something oem. mt1 looks awesome but is expensive even if its a copy. "i" is cheap but i prefer 4 doors with no wing.
when you shadowline do your door pillars and mirrors in matte black too.
this car will look awesome with a little cleaning up. i want a 4 door late model so bad but having 2 cars is enough for now
