Toyota Coilpack info thread

Hey all, pre-empting Sams request for info, heres a start on a database for late Toyota coilpacks.

Ive been using these for about 4 years or so now and have sold many sets on conversions I have done as well as just parts sales for other peoples projects. Some basic facts and info from my experience.

These coils have the igniter built in. This igniter fires on the falling edge of a 5V square wave. Dwell times between 2 and 3 msec work fine. They are extremely rugged and reliable (not including a few recallss etc Toyota conducted, which I believe were all to do with Indonesian made coils, not denso Japan).

To give you an idea how rugged they are, I have probably sold/installed a few hundred and although I have had a few DOA's (dead on arrival), I am yet to see one in service stop working. Maybe Ive just bee lucky.

They will also support over 100Hp each (per cylinder) with boost pressures up to 23 or 24psi no problem to them, even when firing in waste spark config.

These were put with the rubber seals more or less in the same plane so you can get an idea of comparative height.

Source vehicles and part numbers from left to right:

Other coils that I have used a bit which aren't pictured are 2AZFE Camry and 1NZFE. Both of these are longer types, whcih are useful in certain motor like porsches and jags where you need extra reach. Similar in length to the GXE10 ones pictured above.

As a note, also following up som something Sam asked. I have the following plug kits available for sale. These took a lot of hunting and the three components are from three different countries.

Im running denso toyota coilpacks on my sr20, im thinking you may have installed them at some stage

wow Anthony I am impressed. I appear to have 2NZ coils but I need to check. I have written down the cable colours and the part numbers but I don't have it on me. Do all these coils have the same connections? or use the same colour standards? I need to find out how to connect my yaris coils asap. I will post up a few pics on here when I get a chance. Also Anthony I am putting an article together on my website, can I use your pics and info with credit given to where ever you like?

Yeah I guess that's OK. All the coil packs have the same wiring. looking into the coil pack socket, or at the back (wiring side) of the connector with the clip at the top, the first pin is Earth, the second is trigger (IGT) the third is ignition feedback or confirmation (IGF) and the 4th is Ign 12V.

The wiring changes a lot from model to model, but the pinouts remain the same.

hey mate as I'm building my 4agte these toyota coils sound great but I would like to know if these will fit the hi 4age vally cover with little to no mods cheers

no, they're all too tall for that. the next best thing is 4 1JZ coils and a 4 channel igniter. not quite as neat though.

Some information I bumped into.
Here are the Toyota part numbers for the 1ZZ-FE coil pack connectors:

! x Connector: 90980-11885
Pins (x4): 82998-12440
Toyota connector pins with 160mm wire - Toyota P/N 82998-12340 (USD $4.43 each)

Pinout, looking into the coil connector moulding itself :

Left to right : Ground - Trigger - Tach - 12V

Also for those with Aftermarket ECU's:-

The dwell should be set as follows:
8V 6.3 ms
9V 5.3 ms
10V 4.4 ms
11V 3.8 ms
12V 3.2 ms
13V 2.7 ms
14V 2.4 ms
15V 2.2 ms

yeah that info is above as well Not too many aftermarket ecu's run voltage dependent dwell, for those that don't 3msec works fine.

I am a bit confused with the wiring. Is it Earth, (IGT), (IGF), Ign 12V looking from the front (looking into the connector) with the clip at the top from left to right or looking from the back wiring side left to right? Can someone confirm the correct way to look at it.
