Well, it was a short 1st meeting. The extended run in went perfectly as did the 1st but still cautious sprint session. On the 2nd run, starting push a bit harder, the box lost 4th. I pulled off line and onto an un used section of track. After picking up a working gear my plan was to slowly make my way back to the pits. But, loud bad noises happened and... it locked solid requiring a flat bed tow back to the pits.
We swapped boxes in 45min ready for the next run. We had a few onlookers who were amazed to see it happen in a short time and not overly rushed fashion.
With a lap or 2 pits I returned just in time for the next run.
At the first braking marker the was an noise like the exhaust had come loose only worse started. A very cautious return to the pits followed...
I'm expecting to find the flywheel loose and some broken bolts from the box sudden seizure.

Thanks for the update
I understand the first gearbox it is a straight gear , dog type?
And the second it is a normal TRD gearing or just normal T-50
Hopefully it is only the flywheel bolts or just the pressures plate failure.

The failed box was a straight cut dog box. Quaife for TRD. It was a Team Toyota Aust box from the Group A era. New to me and un tested.
Video to follow. I see I missed a down change to 3rd a few corners earlier.
The box that went in was my tested Albins close ratio helical syncro box.

I wonder if this works?

So I had a little look at the box today. Taking the bell housing off I didn't expect to find a shattered bearing! But I did.

Then once it was open I found the selector fork uses a bolt to hold it to the selector rail. The bolt was tie wired in place but it had broken and the bolt come loose. Explains why 4th and 5th didn't engage.
When I was in third gear limping back to the pits there was a bump in the track going up a hill. This was enough to jolt the now loose fork and engage 4th gear at the same time. Disaster ensued!

Whooa! I believe you have a problem. That is going to be a few $$ to fix. Or are you just going to get a new trans? Is the selector fork bolt to selector rail a common failure?.

I will fix it. I'm guessing there will be a few $k involved and a fair bit of time. Especially as Quaife dont list any of the parts anymore. I have an albins close ratio box to use in the mean time though.
