Need Help With Suspension Setup

Hey guys, I'm new to all this so a bit lost with new suspension setup for my AE71.

Things I need to know:

-What's the best stuff to get for a suspension setup for an AE71 street car? How much will it cost? I'll be doing a fair bit of driving in the hills if that helps

-How much will AE86 front struts cost approximately?

this is a pretty open question, lots of people have different opinions.

there are several different threads that you should read up and learn spring rates and the like

i would suggest getting in contact with ajps, dave will be able to recommend some good spring rates and shocks for you.

get some ae86 struts, ae86 jdm brakes, T series diff (drum will be fine) selby swaybars and suitable shocks/springs.

the thing will be sweet, but be prepared to spend a few grand on the sus, its the only way to go to get it right

Yeah, probably not possible...

I don't have a whole lot of money and at least a grand of it is going into a 4AGE, a grand on wheels and tyres. I'll have only about a grand for suspension.

You know how much the struts and brakes will cost?

This thing will be more of a fun daily, probably won't be drifted

mate get your priorities right first before you begin a project.

you mentioned hills. well brakes and susp are pretty damned important (for most driving i know but in particular) for hills.

a well balanced car will perform best, i.e not too stiff front vs. rear like some drift corollas seem to be setup.

IMO spend your money where it counts. sick wheels look good and can allow for bigger better tyres. but will you be putting good tyres on?

a 4age is a failry easy engine swap for some increase in power, but unless you have the susp and brakes to utealise it, then whats the point?

im a big fan of suspension. so i say set that up first then start worrying about engine/power etc. ma61 rims and the like are cheap and let you run bigger tyres without troubles. save some cash in the short term at least...

defiently get the sus before the engine.

there is no point having a car with some power if the chassis cant actually handle or you cant handle it

AE86 struts w brakes - 250
AE86 P/S arms - 150
re bushed 10mm longer control arms - 200
Castor rod bushes - 50
New tie rod ends, rack ends - 150
Strut brace - 150

KYB Excel g short strokes all round- 400
6 and 4.5 kg springs - 500
Adjustable Panhard rod - 150

=$2000

I wouldnt bother doing any less, as only doing the majority of those mods would highlight the huge downfall in the parts that you missed out.

Where are you buying your springs? Kings are $120 a pair.

Try some xt130 struts and even go the ra60 calipers and discs straight off. I paid $130 for complete xt130 struts from the wrecker. May be slightly dearer now.
Reco'd MX62 calipers $200 (I have these if you are interested) You'll need to slightly grind the strut tabs and fit some spacers/washers. There is a writeup on toymods about this.
New ra60 discs $150 (can also use wrecker discs and machine them to save a few bucks.
New rack ends $150
Caster rod bushes $50?
LCA bushes $50?
New tie rod ends $50
New ball joints $50
New pads $50 (I have these too)
Springs front and rear $250
KYB shocks (take konakids word for it at $400 for front and rear, I've never bought the excel g's)
Probably need adjustable panhard bar. $150

Total $1680 and you'll have sweet, sweet brakes and suspension.
This is just an approximation but i'd say it's within $100

I wouldn't bother with the power steer arms to start with. If you decide you want faster steering you can easily upgrade to them later or go the whole hog and throw a quaife rack in it.
Strut brace is nice but can wait.

...and kings springs are about 25mm lower than stock and only 5% harder.

The springs im talking about are AJPS ones, decent rate, decent heights, good quality made in adelaide.

think a full set is about 450 all up, just made it 500 for calculations sake.

Fair enough. Add $250 to my estimate, brings it up to around $1900.
