teaching a learner...your help

Wheres a good clear area to teach a new learner to drive....and what times of the day or night are good?
...and no... it wont be for skids!

On a farm if u can with a massive paddock. But failing that...

First couple of lessons, quite industrial area with no cars, rounded gutters and keep them under 30kms and randomly say stop now quick to them. Get them used to braking as if it is instinctively. So if someone pulls out in front of them they don't really shit themselves.

I found with my kid he is 12 btw, that coming out of corners was where he needed the most time in that he almost went off the track at the farm.

Gear changes, i found telling him to let the shifter drop into the center first helped allot. ie. when going from second to third, let the shifter center and push it straight up, or across etc for 1st, 2nd and 5th.

Also make sure u do the simple things like removing car mats as well from under the peddles, cos my bro when he was learning completely let go of the wheel and that to move the car mat and almost stacked it.

I did most of my driving as a kid to / from school.

ETSA park is usually pretty good, Flinders University on the weekend - great for hillstarts and stuff. These two are good for getting the basics down, take-off, coming to a stop and basic car control.

Then i'd move on the places like lonsdale or other industrial areas where you can get some higher speeds up and have them get comfortable driving the car under 'normal' conditions with no traffic, slowing for turns from 50, negotiating give way signs correctly etc.

Then move on to jaunts around the neighbourhood in light traffic and escalate from there.

as they become more confident dont forget hills, night, rain and dirt driving

Try to get them do understand manual before throwing them in the drivers seat. Maybe talk through the gears when driving. Get them to change gears from the passenger seat. I only did a little bit of manual driving in a carpark but I learnt in an auto... but I understood how to operate a manual in theory and I found it much easier to grasp and I was able to teach myself to drive a manual by myself just by driving around the block a few nights a week till I got confident in going out on a main road...I had my full license before I learnt manual though :o
