Import Question

Let's say instead of going the classic route of importing from Japan and having it meet regulations, say I find a car in the USA instead and want to import it. Would I have an easier time importing the same car from the US, in terms of it having more similar regulations as us?

Reason being I'm exploring this at all is that I only just recently got into Japanese imports, but had a way easier time with American customs in the past. If I could get the same or near the same car with less hassle, I'm all for it. Thanks and hope this isn't too dumb a question.

I know of one guy who can help you with the process, His name is Andy, he's on Rollaclub as Loveke70. He imported a 2 door ke70 corolla from the states a few years back, I'm sure he'd happily share what he learned.
